For the eighth year in a row, Finland has been ranked the world’s happiest country, according to the World Happiness Report. The report is based on survey responses from residents of more than 140 countries ranking their lives on a scale from zero to 10, with zero being the worst and 10 being the best. The United States ranks 24th this year.
In addition to ranking their lives on the scale, the report uses six key variables to describe the variations in global happiness including gross domestic product (GDP), social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
Based on the results, people in Finland are the happiest in the world. According to the report, residents of Finland are content with their lives in part because of their social support and “expected benevolent acts” within their communities. Finland ranked the highest in a poll on the likeliness of a lost wallet returned to its owner. Behind Finland ranked three additional Nordic nations that also attribute their happiness to their social support and belief in the kindness of others.
Costa Rica and Mexico made it to the top ten for the first time since the report began 13 years ago. The residents of both countries attribute some of their happiness to the strong social bonds they have with people and the consistency of sharing meals with others. Countries that didn’t make the top 20 associate some of their unhappiness with feeling lonely.
