Rosie O’Donnell can’t seem to outrun her longstanding feud with President Donald Trump.

The comedian and former talk show host opened up about her decision to leave the United States for Ireland, ahead of Trump’s 2025 inauguration during her Friday appearance on RTÉ’s Late Late Show. 

Asked what prompted her decision, O’Donnell didn’t hesitate to point to Trump, claiming that he “has it out for me and has for 20 years, when I told the truth about him on a program called The View.“

She continued, “I mentioned his bankruptcies and I mentioned all of the sexual assault charges and I mentioned that he was not, in fact, the businessman that everyone thinks he is because of the show, The Apprentice, where they sold a bunch of lies to America for over 10 years and half of America believed it. And so he was very angry to say the least, and he hasn’t let it go. And he sort of uses me as a punchline whenever he feels the need.”

O’Donnell then pointed to the “surreal” Oval Office moment that occurred earlier this month, when Trump questioned Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin about her big move. During Martin’s St. Patrick’s Day visit to the White House, a reporter asked, “Why in the world would you let Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland? I think she’s going to lower your happiness levels.”

While Martin laughed off the query, Trump responded, “Thank you, I like that question.” He then pushed further, asking Martin if he knew of O’Donnell, which the Irish leader brushed off. Trump then quipped that he was “better off” not knowing.

O’Donnell shared that following the “very, very surreal” moment, she offered Martin an apology.

“I felt very troubled that they put the taoiseach [Irish prime minister] in that position and didn’t treat him with the respect that a leader of that kind deserves when he’s visiting The White House,” she said. “I wrote the taoiseach with a little note of apology to his email and got a note back that they had received it and thanked me. But I just wanted him to know the history and what happened and why he seems to be out to get me in ways that are startling to most.”

As for Trump constantly calling her out publicly, she added, “He’s been doing it for two decades and I’m still not used to it every time he does.”

Earlier this month, the former host of The View revealed that she had moved abroad with her 12-year-old, Clay, and is pursuing Irish citizenship.

“When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” she told viewers. She elaborated on this point during her late-night appearance, explaining that the decision was partially fueled by concern for her son’s future.

“I have a child who has autism and that child will be denied services and many, many autistic children because the funding for these programs for special needs children comes from the federal government as well as the States,” she said. “And it’s going to be disastrous for children on the spectrum. And that was terrifying.”

She continued, “But the biggest reason that it was different than the first time he was in office is because of the Supreme Court giving him ultimate power, the powers of a king or a monarch. And that’s not what the United States is all about. And it’s a terrifying prospect. And, in fact, what has happened since he’s taken office has been terrifying, I think for the world and definitely for the United States of America.”

Trump and O’Donnell have been battling it out long before he stepped into office, with the feud dating back to O’Donnell’s brief stint as a cohost of The View in the mid-2000s. The pair routinely fired vicious posts back and forth on the social media site formerly known as Twitter, but the acrimony reached a new level as Trump rose in the political sphere.

Complaining about the feud in 2020, O’Donnell said, “I think he can’t let go of a strong woman standing up to him. He won’t let it die.”
