In lieu of spring gardening season and the launch of Martha’s 101st book, Martha Stewart’s Gardening Handbook: The Essential Guide to Designing, Planting, and Growing, Martha made a recent appearance on the TODAY Show to share her must-have gardening tools.

With decades of experience tending to vegetables, herbs, and flowers on her farm in Bedford, New York, Martha has become an expert at selecting the essentials every gardener needs to maintain a thriving landscape.

Martha’s Must-Have Gardening Tools

1. Gloves

A good pair of gloves is very essential, Martha says. Gloves with a non-slip grip allow you to safely perform gardening tasks and keep your hands clean when weeding, digging, and more. 2. Pruners

Pruners effortlessly cut through branches, shrubs, fruit trees, creepers, and more. “These are sharp, easy to use. They have nice covered handles so that your hands don’t slip,” says Martha. 3. Trowel

Trowels are small shovels used for gardening and are considered an especially essential tool to Martha. She explains that their primary use is “to dig and to lift.” They come in different sizes, depending on the plants you’re working with. 4. Serrated Knife

A serrated knife is Martha’s “favorite new tool” to use in the garden. The one in her new QVC collection is actually a tomato knife that she adopted for the kitchen. Martha says it “will cut through anything—any leaf, any stem—it is the most fabulous tool.” 

5. Hori Hori

A hori hori knife is an ancient Japanese tool used for gardening and one of Martha’s favorite tools to keep on hand. This tool not only cuts with its serrated edge, but it digs and chops, too, Martha says. She also notes that this tool has measurements on the blade, allowing you to know exactly how deep you’re digging into the soil.
