Mark Dobies, an actor who’s appeared on some of TV’s most watched shows since the late ’90s — Guiding Light, Home Improvement, Just Shoot Me!, and Melrose Place — has died. He was 65.

His obituary, posted on the Apyre National Cremation Services site, said he died March 11 in Dunellen, N.J. No cause of death was given.

Born on April 3, 1959, Dobies attended college at what is now Delaware Valley University on a football scholarship before turning to acting. He appeared in his first TV shows in the late 1990s and counted the 1998 TV adaptation of the Sandra Bullock movie The Net, Nash Bridges, and Everybody Loves Raymond among his credits.

Then, beginning in 2000, he portrayed Dr. Noah Chase on Guiding Light. In 2004, he starred in the off-Broadway revival of The Normal Heart in a production at the Public Theater in New York City. Dobies followed it up with appearances on All My Children and One Life to Live. On both, he played D.A. Theodore Daniel Colson.

Dobies costarred on the latter with Hillary B. Smith, who played love interest Nora. The soap caused a stir when it revealed his character was gay, PEOPLE reported.

“They offered me a juicy role and playing across from Hillary right now is great,” he told Soap Opera Digest of the part in May 2004. “It’s picking up — it’s a lot of work for a recurring role. I’m having a good time.”

Appearances on Fringe, the original Gossip Girl, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent followed. His final credit was in 2016 sports movie Greater.

“His presence on screen and stage reflected his dedication and talent as a performer,” Dobies’ obituary reads.

When he wasn’t acting, Dobies was passionate about the Philadelphia Eagles. “His love for sports extended beyond the field as well; he was an avid athlete who competed in several triathlons and found joy in helping others reach their fitness goals, offering personal training to anyone in need of it,” Dobies’ obituary reads.

The actor is survived by his children, including Francesca, 27; Olivia, 24; and 21-year-old Robert, along with his mother, Suzanne, and siblings, Paul and Sandy.
