• After a fire nearly destroyed it in 2022, the Veranda House on Nantucket, Massachusetts, is set to reopen on April 1 after a massive renovation.

The Veranda House, an iconic hotel on Nantucket, Massachusetts, will reopen on April 1 after a massive renovation. In 2022, the hotel caught fire, causing $12 million in damage, and the owners were forced to demolish what was left of the property.

Sited just blocks from the harbor on the edge of Nantucket’s historic district, the Veranda House is one of the most iconic hotels in the popular New England resort town. Built in 1684 as a private residence, the property is known for its distinct federal-style façade and large wraparound veranda.

The property was reconstructed with guidance from the town’s Historic District Commission to ensure that original details were faithfully recreated. The hotel’s size, scale, and architectural signatures have been preserved, but the Veranda House now has updated ADA-compliant rooms and common spaces and new-and-improved amenities. 

Just like the old Veranda House, the refreshed property has 19 rooms, ranging from the Petite Queen to the Grand Harborview King, which has a fireplace and a private balcony with views of the waterfront. But, no matter what room category they pick, guests can expect calming, coastal-inspired design, plush beds with down pillows, updated bathrooms with Carrara marble countertops, walk-in showers, ​Malin & Goetz toiletries, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a continental breakfast of pastries, fresh fruit, and local eggs.

Longtime fans may be pleased to learn that sections of the historic building were preserved in the new construction—specifically, parts of the original veranda.

“It’s impossible to talk about Veranda House without highlighting the verandas and their spectacular views of Nantucket Harbor—they are the property’s namesake, after all,” Ralph Izzi, vice president of marketing for TPG Hotels & Resorts, the hospitality company behind Veranda House, said. “As part of the renovation, we carefully preserved pieces of the original hand-crafted railings to ensure they were recreated to match the historic design.”

But one of the biggest draws of Veranda House is its expansive outdoor spaces, which have also been updated. Here, visitors can relax in an English country-style garden with Adirondack chairs. And if you’re bringing Fido along, the hotel has rebooted its VIP (Very Important Pet) program, which comes with perks like a curated Nantucket pet-friendly activity guide, a complimentary dog toy, and dog walks. 

With the reopening just a few weeks away, the team sees the Veranda House’s return as a symbol of the town’s tenacious spirit.

“Bringing it back while honoring its historic roots has been incredibly meaningful, not just for us but for the entire community,” Izzi and Hehir said in a joint statement. “It’s a reflection of Nantucket’s resilience and timeless appeal, and we’re excited to once again welcome both locals and travelers to experience this special place.”
