“Grosse Pointe Garden Society” is on the move.
NBC is moving the drama series from its current Sunday night timeslot to Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT beginning April 4. “Dateline NBC” will take over the Sunday 10 p.m. slot.
The move does not bode well for the future of “Grosse Pointe,” as a move to Fridays midway through a freshman season typically indicates a show is destined for cancellation. NBC has been successfully programming comedies on Friday nights of late, however, with the Reba McEntire multi-cam “Happy’s Place” recently earning a Season 2 renewal. The season finale of that show is set to air on March 21.
Still, despite relatively solid reviews, “Grosse Pointe” has failed to make a major impact in the broadcast ratings. Per NBC, the pilot has grown to a 1.21 rating in the adults 18-49 demo and 6.6 million total viewers across all platforms since it originally debuted on Feb. 23.
But according to the most recently available Nielsen Live+7 data, the “Grosse Pointe” episode that aired on March 9 went from just over 1 million viewers and a 0.13 rating to approximately 1.8 million viewers and a 0.2 after seven days of playback. In fairness, those numbers do not factor in Peacock viewership, where the show streams.
“Grosse Pointe” was one of three dramas NBC scheduled to launch at midseason, along with both “Suits: LA” and “The Hunting Party.”
Per the official logline, “Grosse Pointe” is said to follow “four members of a suburban garden club who find their lives intertwined by scandal, mischief and a shared secret – a murder no one wants to talk about. As dark truths begin to rot their lives under the surface, they struggle to remain as perfect as the flowers blooming in their garden above.”
The cast includes “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” alum Melissa Fumero as well as Aja Naomi King, Ben Rappaport, AnnaSophia Robb, Matthew Davis, Alexander Hodge, Nancy Travis, and Felix Wolfe. Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs created the series and serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Casey Kyber also executive produces. Universal Television is the studio.
