Magic mirror on the wall, who is the cheekiest director of them all? Steven Spielberg, apparently.
Rachel Zegler shared that her West Side Story director Spielberg is to thank for her casting in Disney’s live-action Snow White, and that the esteemed filmmaker actually informed her that she got the gig by dropping what Zegler, a noted Swiftie, referred to as a Taylor Swift-style Easter egg to her.
“I actually got a really glowing recommendation from Steven Spielberg to [director] Marc Webb,” Zegler said during a Monday night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “And I also got a text from Steven kind of alluding to the fact that I had gotten the part before I found out. Because I wished him a Happy Father’s Day, as one does, and he texted me a bunch of apple emojis as a response.”

Kimmel called Spielberg’s response “very clever” and “very Steven Spielberg.”
“Yeah, he was giving Taylor Swift Easter eggs about my casting,” Zegler said with a laugh.
Zegler also shared insights on the secretive nature of being cast in a Disney film, revealing that she initially was not aware that she was reading for the part of Snow White. “With all of these Disney things, you have no idea what you’re reading,” she said. “It’ll say ‘untiled Disney live action film’ and the sides will have different names. It’ll say Amber and Jeff.”

It was not until her first Zoom read with director Webb “that he had let it slip that I was actually conversing with Dopey,” said Zegler of one of the seven dwarves. “And in the back of my head I went, ‘Okay.'”
Zegler’s turn as Snow White has so far earned gleaming reviews following the film’s Los Angeles premiere despite the controversy that has followed the title, including the racist backlash to Zegler’s casting as an actress of Colombian descent. She also called the original 1937 version dated when it comes to “ideas of women being in roles of power” while speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 2022, ruffling the feathers of those bemoaning a “woke” adaptation.
Snow White, which also stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, is in theaters Friday. Watch Zegler’s chat with Kimmel above.
