Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees ZZ Top have announced that their longtime drummer, Frank Beard, is taking a break from touring to treat an undisclosed ailment.
The “Sharp Dressed Man” performers revealed in an Instagram statement on Sunday that Beard, 75, will be stepping away from the band’s ongoing Elevation tour to undergo a health procedure.
“Shelter Music Group, ZZ Top’s management, has announced the band’s drummer, Mr. Frank Beard, has temporarily stepped away from the current tour to attend a health issue requiring his focus in the near term,” their statement read. “Beard, along with Fellow ZZ Top members Billy F Gibbons and Elwood Francis, presently on the Elevation tour since March 5, have engaged fellow Texan and longtime tech member, percussionist, and drummer, John Douglas for the interim.”
The statement noted that Douglas has “maintained a close relationship” with the band over the years and even “served with the group in the past,” noting that he filled in when Beard “underwent an emergency appendectomy” in 2002.
It concluded, “[Beard] is looking forward to a speedy recovery.”

ZZ Top is currently on the second leg of their Elevation tour, which kicked off on Mar. 5. The stint will see the classic rockers performing across the United States for most of March and April before heading to Australia and New Zealand.
Beard has served as ZZ Top’s drummer since 1969, when he replaced co-founder Dan Mitchell. He has performed on all 15 of the band’s albums, though they have not released any new music since 2012’s La Futura.
